Travel Medical Insurance is More Essential Than You May Think

A couple recently made a last minute decision to vacation to Peru for some relaxation. Once they arrived though, relaxation was elusive.
Within the first 24 hours, they both suffered from food poisoning and had to visit a local clinic for medication.
From there, they developed sun poisoning from not wearing enough sunblock under the blaring equator sunshine and thin atmosphere of the highly-elevated areas of Peru. Over-the-counter medication helped.
But it didn’t end there. The two vacationers then flew to Machu Picchu, where they experienced altitude sickness, which unfortunately landed them back in a doctor’s office for oxygen therapy and anti-inflammatory drugs.
They were healthy by the time they flew back home to the States, but soon learned that they would be responsible for their medical bills because, unbeknownst to them prior to their journey, their health insurance doesn’t cover illnesses or injuries outside the U.S. They had budgeted for airfare, food, and drinks, but they did not factor in the potential of costly medical bills.
Had they purchased Travel Medical insurance, it would have covered many of their healthcare costs. Travel Medical insurance provides coverage internationally— and connects travelers to a network of providers and 24-hour travel assistance.
You might not think you’ll need medical care while traveling abroad, but you never can plan for a sickness. Illnesses and injuries strike when you least expect them, so it’s best to have a backup plan. Learn more about Travel Medical plan options.
