Why NCI-level expertise is important
When you or a loved one are facing cancer, where you receive treatment is as important as the treatment you receive. That’s why you should consider a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Cancer Center.

Each year, approximately 250,000 patients receive their cancer diagnoses at an NCI-Designated Cancer Center. Thousands more are treated and enrolled in cancer clinical trials at these centers.1
What is an NCI designation? Most NCI-Designated Cancer Centers are affiliated with university medical centers and have met rigorous standards for cancer prevention, clinical services, or research as determined by the NCI. There are 72 NCI-Designated Cancer Centers, located in 36 states and the District of Columbia, all funded by NCI to deliver leading-edge cancer care. Of these, 51 are Comprehensive Cancer Centers recognized not only for their scientific leadership and resources, but also for the depth and breadth of their research.
NCI Cancer Centers are the source of many innovative treatments and clinical trials. The designation involves a rigorous evaluation process to ensure the center pursues scientific excellence and has the capability to integrate diverse research approaches to cancer. Centers must undergo review every five to seven years to maintain their designation.
Why choose an NCI-Designated Cancer Center? NCI-Designated Cancer Centers provide patients with:
- access to leading-edge treatments
- entry into clinical trials in early phases of drug development
- improved chances of survival and recovery
- physicians who collaborate with researchers to develop new approaches to detecting, preventing, and beating cancer
- an entire team of cancer specialists who can personalize treatment plans, including surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation therapists, and pathologists, in addition to dedicated nurses, social workers, psychiatrists, and physical therapists
Cutting-edge cancer care can be expensive. Critical Illness insurance is designed to help with the expenses of cancer not covered by your health insurance. Because your choice of treatment center is such an important component of your care, our Critical Illness plan includes extra benefits for an NCI-Designated Cancer Center evaluation, with additional benefits for transportation and lodging if the center is more than 100 miles from your home.
If you or a family member find yourselves among the millions of Americans diagnosed with cancer this year, an NCI-Designated Cancer Center can provide the highest quality of care.
