While you might love catching some rays in the summer heat, your furry little pals might not enjoy it as much. In fact, if you aren’t careful, the intense temperatures of the season could be detrimental—or even lethal—to your pets.

Follow these pointers to guarantee your doggo a safe and happy summer vacation.

1. Plan your travel dates mindfully. If you don’t want to keep your pet at home or a kennel during your trip, plan ahead – leaving them in a hot car is very dangerous, even on an overcast day.

2. Check for hot surfaces. You know how painful it is to walk barefoot across the sand on a scorching summer day. Keep in mind that it’s not much better for your pet! Before taking your pal out for a walk, make sure the surface of the ground isn’t too hot. Simply place your hand on the surface for 10 seconds.

3. Be watchful of your doggy-paddler. While most dogs love to swim, remember salt water can quickly dehydrate them while chlorine from the pool can cause skin and eye irritation. Swallowing large quantities of water may lead to what is known as “dry drowning.”

4. Stay hydrated. Speaking of water, be sure always to bring chilled water and a dish wherever you play and be on the lookout for signs of overheating.

5. Be diligent with all types of medications. The summer is prime tick and flea season, so keeping up on all topical treatments is the best way to thwart pests like these, and also fleas and lice. Maintaining your dog’s grooming routine will not only prevent these nuisances from making your pet’s fur their new home, but will remove excess hair, keeping your best friend cooler.

6. Don’t share dinner. While you may think your BBQ’s leftover bones make a nice treat – you’d be wrong. Not only are they choking hazards, but if swallowed, they can damage your pet’s stomach and intestinal tract. Picnic droppings can also be dangerous depending on the food. Always err on the side of caution. If it’s not within your pet’s normal diet, it might not be safe.

7. As usual, see your vet whenever necessary. If you suspect something could be wrong with your pets, get them checked immediately. It’s always better to be safe than sorry – especially if you have pet insurance to help pick up the bill.
