Questions to ask Your Long Term Care Advisor
Come prepared with these important questions.
Congratulations! You’ve made the decision to plan ahead for long term care. As you prepare to start LTC planning, have this checklist ready for your Advisor.
Long Term Care Insurance Provides Options
There are many ways to pay for care when you need it and where you’d like to receive it.
- Request a comparison of both traditional and hybrid LTC options. Become familiar with the costs, benefits, and disadvantages of each so you can make an educated decision about which type of coverage is best for you.
- Ask for quotes for good, better, and best coverage from each company to compare different levels of coverage.
- Ask whether a policy covers home health care benefits and all levels of nursing home care, including skilled, intermediate, and custodial care. Find out the benefit amount for each, and how long benefits will last. Look for a policy that covers less severe impairments and allows you to stay in your own home.
- Some policies will pay family members who provide care. Make sure you understand who qualifies as a family member and whether their training will be covered.
- Find out whether LTC benefits can be shared by a spouse or domestic partner.
- Understand which circumstances (known as the “trigger”) will allow you to draw benefits.
- Question riders that you don’t think you need.
- Understand the levers. When comparing policies, focus on the five key elements that contribute to price and quality:
- the daily benefit
- the benefit period
- the deductible
- inflation protection
- the financial strength of the company underwriting the policy
As you evaluate various LTC plans, remember that all policies are not created equally. It’s important to understand your options so you can make informed decisions. These questions should get you started. Schedule an appointment today.
