Auto insurance rates are also largely dependent on age. Female teen drivers pay significantly less than male teens in 45 states, but the cost differential typically evens out by age 25, when women generally see a hike in their rates.³

Some states are taking steps to eliminate gender as a rate factor, but it’s important to know the factors beyond gender and age that can affect your car insurance rates. These include your location, driving history, marital status, the car you drive, and even your credit history.  Insurers weigh these factors differently with some placing greater value on things like your driving record than your gender, so it’s important to focus on factors you can control:

• Safe driving. Avoid speeding and reckless driving that can result in accidents, moving violations, and insurance claims.
• Your car. Research auto insurance rates before you purchase a car. The make and model as well as the number of miles you drive can impact your rates.
• Your credit history. Insurers may use information from your credit report to create an auto insurance score, so avoid negative credit behaviors and check your credit report for errors to ensure you’ll receive a fair evaluation.
